Owen Yagar, a standout defenseman for the Cambridge Redhawks, has quickly made a name for himself as one of the league’s top blue-liners. Named to the Midwestern Conference All-Rookie Team last year, Yagar’s skill, hockey IQ, and elite skating have propelled him into the spotlight. This season, he’s focused on building off his early success, setting an example for his teammates, and making the most of every opportunity on the ice.
Reflecting on his hockey journey, Yagar credits several people who have shaped his approach to the game. “My personal trainer, Vinny Merante, has been huge for me. I’ve been with him for over six years, and he’s helped me grow so much with one-on-one training,” he says.
“The atmosphere is incredible. People always say nothing beats a Saturday night at Galt Arena,” he shares. “It’s such a hockey town with a rich history, and I couldn’t be more appreciative”
His family, too, has been a powerful influence, especially his parents, who “pushed me to be the best version of myself.” But Yagar also recognizes the impact of his teammates over the years, saying, “They’re the best part of coming to the rink.”
Yagar’s leadership philosophy is rooted in leading by his play. “I believe enforcing what you say but also showing it in your actions is vital. Actions speak louder than words, so it’s all about following through,” he explains. For Yagar, staying positive is also essential. “It’s easy to get down on yourself during a long season, so keeping a positive mindset is key,” he adds.
Known for his high hockey IQ, Yagar’s playstyle is marked by patience and vision. “I’ve always had the ability to see plays differently. When I was younger, it didn’t always work out, but as my skill level caught up, it helped me grow,” he says.
Now, with added strength and experience, he’s refined his ability to make plays, capitalizing on his unique perspective of the game. “A big part of being a good offensive defenseman is staying calm. Watching video has shown me how important it is to take my time and not rush things,” he shares, underscoring the value of composure in his game.
Among Yagar’s favourite hockey memories is scoring his first goal on his childhood best friend, who now plays for the Siskins. “We live on campus together, so scoring on him made it even more special.”
Last season, Yagar’s impact on the ice was recognized with all-rookie votes, achievements that he’s eager to build upon. His goals for this season are both personal and team oriented. “I want to help lead the team to success and continue to improve my own game,” he says.
As a student at Wilfred Laurier University, Yagar hopes to play OUA hockey for the Golden Hawks, though for now, his focus remains squarely on enjoying the journey and supporting his teammates.
The Cambridge fan base has left a lasting impression on Yagar, and they appreciate their unwavering support. “The atmosphere is incredible. People always say nothing beats a Saturday night at Galt Arena,” he shares. “It’s such a hockey town with a rich history, and I couldn’t be more appreciative,” he adds. Events like “Skate with the Redhawks,” where kids can skate with the players and share their own stories after the games, allow Yagar and his teammates to connect with the community on a personal level.
When it comes to rivals, Yagar is especially excited about matchups with teams like the Kitchener-Waterloo Siskins, Ayr Centennials and Elmira Sugar Kings. “Playing local teams brings out that extra 10%,” he says, adding that these games have a different intensity that pushes the players to dig deep.
Off the ice, Yagar has enjoyed learning from past defensive partners, especially players like Jack D’arcy and Cole Dal Bello. “Jack and I aligned perfectly on the ice. Our passing plays and support for each other just clicked,” he recalls. With Cole, an engineering student with a sharp mind for the game, Yagar learned valuable techniques for creating time and space. “He showed me little tricks to anticipate plays and where guys would be attacking,” he says, crediting Cole’s mentorship as pivotal in his rookie season.
Owen Yagar’s journey with the Redhawks is marked by dedication, skill, and a passion for the game. Whether leading his team with calm confidence on the ice or engaging with fans in the community, he’s a player whose impact goes beyond goals and assists.
